About This Journey
Satpura Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh is India's most experientially diverse wildlife destination — the only reserve offering jeep safaris, walking safaris, and canoe safaris on the Denwa River all in one package. Its ancient Vindhya hills, dense teak forests, and waterfalls shelter tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gaur, wild dogs, and one of India's richest raptors assemblages. The Pachmarhi hill station (1.5 hrs), Madhya Pradesh's only hill station with waterfalls, cave temples, and Colonial-era bungalows, is the ideal nearby extension. Bori Wildlife Sanctuary borders the reserve forming an extended corridor. The heritage city of Bhopal (3.5 hrs) with its lakes and Bhimbetka rock shelters, and Ratapani Tiger Reserve (3 hrs) complete the central Madhya Pradesh circuit. Best visited October to June; walking safaris available November to May.

Must Visit Spots

Satpura offers some of India's only permitted walking safaris inside a tiger reserve, guided by expert trackers for an intimate, ground-level jungle experience.

Paddling along the Denwa River gives a unique river-level perspective of Satpura's wildlife, with excellent chances of spotting gharials, mugger crocodiles, kingfishers, and mammals at the waterline.

Satpura has a strong leopard population and the rugged, rocky terrain makes for ideal leopard habitat and relatively frequent sightings compared to other reserves.

Satpura is particularly well known for sloth bear sightings, with a healthy population frequently encountered near rocky outcrops and mahua-rich forest areas.
