About This Journey
Sanjay Dubri National Park and Tiger Reserve, tucked away in the Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh, is one of central India's best-kept wildlife secrets. Formed by joining Sanjay National Park and the Dubri Wildlife Sanctuary, this young reserve spans dense sal forests, bamboo groves, and the winding Banas River, sheltering tigers, leopards, sloth bears, and packs of wild dogs (dhole) across a landscape that sees only a fraction of the visitors that flock to Bandhavgarh or Kanha. The reserve carries a remarkable place in conservation history — it was here, in 1951, that the legendary white tiger cub Mohan was discovered, becoming the ancestor of nearly every white tiger living in captivity today, a legacy honoured with a park range named after him. Sanjay Dubri also forms a vital wildlife corridor linking Bandhavgarh (just under 2 hours away) with the forests of Guru Ghasidas and Palamau further east. With uncrowded safari zones, attentive local naturalists, and genuine wilderness at every turn, this is the destination for travellers who want authentic tiger territory without the crowds. Best visited October to June.

Must Visit Spots

In 1951, a white tiger cub named Mohan was found near a cave in this forest — he went on to become the ancestor of virtually all white tigers in captivity today. One of the park's ranges is named in his honour, making this a site of genuine conservation history.

With a steadily growing big cat population and far fewer vehicles per safari zone than neighbouring reserves, Sanjay Dubri offers an intimate, less-crowded chance to track tigers and leopards through open sal forest.

Dense evergreen sal forest interspersed with bamboo groves and grassy meadows creates a rich mosaic of habitats, home to sloth bears, chital, nilgai, sambar, and one of the region's healthiest dhole populations.

The Banas River and its network of forest streams wind through the reserve, drawing wildlife to their banks and supporting over 150 recorded bird species — a haven for birdwatchers and photographers alike.
