About This Journey
Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya's Rift Valley is celebrated for its remarkable flamingo flocks that turn the lake pink, alongside one of Africa's best rhino sanctuaries protecting both black and white rhinoceros. The park also harbours lions, leopards, buffalos, Rothschild giraffes, hippos, and waterbuck in compact, easily explored terrain around the alkaline lake. Baboon Cliff and Lion Hill viewpoints offer sweeping panoramas across the flamingo-ringed lake. The Makalia Waterfall and Elsamere Forest are rewarding short walks. Nearby Lake Naivasha (60 km) adds hippo boat safaris and Hell's Gate cycling. Bogoria Lake (55 km) has hot springs and even denser flamingo concentrations seasonally. The town of Nakuru provides excellent infrastructure. Easily paired with Masai Mara (3 hrs) on a multi-day Rift Valley circuit. Best visited June to March.
